Fire Breaks Out At Condominium Complex In Norwalk

A chimney fire quickly spread through a Norwalk condominium complex, prompting a heavy response from firefighters in the area.

Crews from the Norwalk Fire Department responded to a reported chimney fire at approximately 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday, March 27 at the Rowayton Woods Condominiums off Highland Avenue.

Upon arrival, firefighters said that heavy fire had already penetrated through the roof of a condo after a homeowner started a fire in a fireplace, which quickly spread.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Edward Prescott, firefighters inside worked to open up and extinguish the fire within the wall, while crews outside the complex worked to prevent flames from spreading to neighboring units.

Prescott said that “a cement block firewall between units inside prevented the fire from extending into the neighboring unit and aggressive roof work controlled the roof fire.” Firefighters from Norwalk were assisted by crews in Westport, New Canaan and Rowayton as they battled the blaze.

No injuries were initially reported. The fire remains under investigation, officials said.
